He made his full England debut in Jan 1988, and was appointed England captain when only 22 years old. He captained England to Grand Slam Championships 1991, 1992, and 1995, the World Cup final 1991, and the World Cup semi final 1995. He was sacked as captain 1995 after remarks made in a television interview, but was quickly reinstated by popular demand. He holds the world record for international appearances as captain.
